Chris Donnelly: Unionist politicians are abdicating responsibility in Scarva and elsewhere

THREATENING journalists reporting on a march organised to raise awareness of an ongoing genocide should be something that unites political leaders in outrage.

At this stage, the police should be singularly focused on identifying the loyalist thugs responsible for both issuing the threats and for the multiple acts of intimidation reported by members of the media present in Scarva on Saturday.

From the first-hand accounts reported today in this paper, it is clear loyalists physically assaulted some journalists and felt empowered to warn others to leave the village and against taking photographs. One photographer said it was “one of the most intimidating and hostile” experiences of his career.

Instead of raising their voice against those issuing threats and behaving in a thuggish manner, unionist politicians have reserved their ire for those of........
