(NewsNation) — Four out of five toddler food products sold at grocery stores are ultra-processed, a new study finds, while nearly half fail to meet at least one nutrition standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin analyzed more than 2,783 toddler food products from 21 grocery stores in Austin. The findings, presented at the American Society for Nutrition’s annual meeting, come as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers new rules for front-of-package nutrition labeling and marketing food to children.
The study found that 81 percent of toddler food products were ultra-processed and 49% failed to meet at least one WHO nutrient recommendation for children ages 6 to 36 months.
