Gabbard: Trump concluded Iran posed an imminent threat
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Tuesday said President Trump “concluded that the terrorist Islamist regime in Iran posed an imminent threat and he took action,” her first comments that come in the wake of a top aide of hers resigning in protest of the conflict against Iran.
“Donald Trump was overwhelmingly elected by the American people to be our President and Commander in Chief,” Gabbard said in an afternoon post on the social platform X.
“As our Commander in Chief, he is responsible for determining what is and is not an imminent threat, and whether or not to take action he deems necessary to protect the safety and security of our troops, the American people and our country,” she added.
Gabbard added that her office “is responsible for helping coordinate and integrate all intelligence to provide the President and Commander in Chief with the best information available to inform his decisions.”
“After carefully reviewing all the information before him, President Trump concluded that the terrorist Islamist regime in Iran posed an imminent threat and he took action based on that conclusion,” Gabbard continued.
Notably, Gabbard did not state that intelligence had come to the same conclusion as the president.
Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Joe Kent posted on X earlier that he was resigning effective immediately and pressed President Trump to backtrack on the conflict in Iran.
“I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby,” Kent said.
In a letter addressed to Trump that he shared, Kent said he supported “the values and the foreign policies that you campaigned on in 2016, 2020” and the last presidential election, but that he disagreed with Trump’s decision to go ahead with the Iran operation.
“I pray that you will reflect upon what we are doing in Iran, and who we are doing it for. The time for bold action is now. You can reverse course and chart a new path for our nation, or you can allow us to slip further toward decline and chaos. You hold the cards,” Kent wrote.
