Takeaways from Trump’s tariff loss
Supreme Court strikes blow to Trump’s tariffs
President Trump suffered a major loss as the Supreme Court on Friday struck down his use of an emergency statute to execute the strategy core to his economic agenda.
Trump was the first president in history to attempt to use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs and had warned that an adverse ruling to his efforts would wreak havoc on the U.S. economy.
“This was an important case to me,” Trump said during a White House press briefing, where he also made rare remarks lambasting conservative justices, including two he nominated, who ruled his use of emergency powers was unlawful.
The justices ruled 6-3 against Trump, with Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, all conservatives, joining up with the high court’s liberal flank to cast aside the bulk of the tariffs.
Here are five takeaways from the momentous Supreme Court decision.
