GOP members call on Tony Gonzales to resign over alleged affair

Several GOP members are urging Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) to resign or end his reelection campaign over allegations that he had an affair with one of his congressional staffers.

“@RepTonyGonzales, RESIGN!” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) wrote on the social media platform X.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) echoed Boebert’s sentiment.

“Tony Gonzales should resign immediately and be held fully accountable for what he’s done. She and her family deserved better. And Texans deserve a congressman who does not prey on women,” Mace wrote in a statement

Gonzales has been under increasing scrutiny since last week, when the San Antonio Express-News reported that the now-deceased aide, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, wrote to another staffer in April 2025: “I had an affair with our boss and I’m fine.” Santos-Avila died last year after setting herself on fire.

Gonzales has previously argued that the allegations are “personal smears” being used by his primary opponent to “score political points,” and said last week he will not be “blackmailed” as the husband of the deceased staffer seeks financial damages.

Still, the allegations have hit the headlines as he faces a competitive primary in his reelection bid. Early voting in Texas opened last week.

It is also against the House’s code of conduct for members to have a sexual relationship with an employee in their office.

Other Republicans also weighed in on Monday.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) wrote on X that, “The entire Texas delegation, as well as every single other Member of Congress, should be condemning a sitting Member of Congress asking for explicit photos of their staff.”

“As a woman, this is really disgusting to see. Not to mention, it brings dishonor on the House of Representatives. I am so sick of people not calling this crap out. Again, like I’ve said before, this is not the only case of this crap up here. @RepTonyGonzales, shame on you,” Luna wrote on X.

She later called on Gonzalez to drop out of the race.

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) also wrote on X: “America deserves better. Tony should drop out of the race.”

Text messages, made public Monday and reported by the San Antonio Express-News and 24sight News, appear to show Gonzales pressing Santos-Aviles for explicit photos. Santos-Aviles’s widower, Adrian Aviles, also provided the messages to The Hill.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), when asked by an NBC News reporter whether he still supports Gonzales, said Monday that he had endorsed the Texas congressman before the allegations came out.

Johnson added he had spoken with Gonzales and told him to “address that in an appropriate way with his constituents and all of that.”

“It’s too early for anybody to prejudge any of that, but we’ll see how it develops,” Johnson said.

The Office of Congressional Conduct had wrapped up an investigation into the matter, according to NBC News, and will transmit an investigation to the House Ethics Committee after the primary ends.

The Hill reached out to Gonzales’s office for comment.
