Springsteen calls Trump ‘racist’ and ‘treasonous’ at DC show

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Bruce Springsteen came to the nation’s capital and blasted its most prominent resident late Wednesday during a three-hour show at the city’s baseball stadium.

Springsteen, a fervent critic of President Trump, set the tone from the start. He called Trump “racist, incompetent [and] treasonous” as he introduced the first song of the night, a cover of Edwin Starr’s “War.”

The 76-year-old rock icon has been to the political fore in recent months after he wrote and recorded a protest song, “Streets of Minneapolis,” almost immediately after Alex Pretti, a nurse, was shot and killed by federal agents in that city on Jan. 24. 

Pretti was killed less than three weeks after another protester, mother-of-three Renee Good, was shot to death by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, also in Minneapolis.

Introducing the song in Washington on Wednesday, Springsteen asserted that federal troops had “brought death and terror” to Minneapolis but “they picked the wrong town.”

He added that residents had “stood shoulder-to-shoulder for their neighbors. Their strength and their commitment told us that this is still America — and the Gestapo tactics of this president and this administration will not stand here.”
