FDA stopped publication of studies showing COVID, shingles vaccines were safe

The Food and Drug Administration in recent months stopped publication of studies about the safety of COVID-19 vaccine and shingles, a Health and Human Services department spokesman confirmed. 

“The studies were withdrawn because the authors drew broad conclusions that were not supported by the underlying data,” spokesman Andrew Nixon said. “The FDA acted to protect the integrity of its scientific process and ensure that any work associated with the agency meets its high standards.” 

The New York Times first reported Tuesday that two COVID vaccine papers and abstracts of studies of a shingles vaccine were blocked by FDA officials. 

The authors of the COVID-19 studies included FDA scientists. 

One of the studies examined the association between vaccination with 2023-2024 formula COVID-19 vaccines and more than a dozen potential health outcomes among Medicare beneficiaries.
