Melania Trump to head to Capitol Hill to talk foster care improvements

First lady Melania Trump is expected to head to Capitol Hill this week to discuss ways to improve foster care efforts.

The first lady will be speaking at a closed-door roundtable Wednesday with members of the House Ways and Means Committee and witnesses form the foster care system, Punchbowl News first reported and was confirmed to The Hill.

Trump has been involved with initiatives surrounding the improvement of foster care and the transition of those who have aged out.

One of her Be Best initiatives, a public awareness campaign the first lady launched during President Trump’s first term, called “Fostering the Future” focuses on securing educational opportunities and scholarships for children in foster care.

In November, she organized an executive order that the president signed called “Fostering the Future for American Children and Families” that focused on enhancing opportunities for children who grew up in foster care.

The Ways and Means Committee has been pushing for legislation to modernize the Chafee program which helps foster youth aged 14 to 21 who have aged out of the program.

The bipartisan proposals would focus on the state utilization of Chafee funds, expand education and training opportunities and access to legal services and improve support for foster youth that are or about to become parents.

“I’m so proud of the work being done by First Lady Melania Trump as part of the President’s Executive order, ‘Fostering the Future,’ to call attention to these critical needs,” Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.) said in a statement. “This legislative effort is consistent with her focus on foster youth and builds on committee activity.”
