DOJ sues Minnesota, alleging Title IX violations over transgender athletes

The Department of Justice (DOJ) sued Minnesota on Monday for allegedly violating Title IX by allowing transgender girls on women’s sports teams, adding to the administration’s growing list of lawsuits around transgender athletes.

The DOJ argues Minnesota has engaged in sex discrimination by making female student athletes compete against transgender girls, as well as share locker rooms and bathrooms with them.

“The Trump Administration does not tolerate flawed state policies that ignore biological reality and unfairly undermine girls on the playing field,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said. “This Department of Justice is proud to partner with HHS [the Department of Health and Human Services] and the Department of Education to protect our girls in Minnesota and across the country.”

The department wants a judge to rule Minnesota’s policies around transgender athletes illegal and declare the state has violated Title IX. The DOJ says Minnesota gets $3 billion in federal funding a year.

The Hill has reached out to the state’s attorney general’s office for comment.

The move is the latest in a series of lawsuits and threats the Trump administration has made against states and universities over policies around transgender athletes.

While many Republican states have banned transgender athletes in women’s sports, the Trump administration has gone after Democratic states, such as California, over the issue.

Colleges, such as the University of Pennsylvania, have seen millions of dollars in federal funding pulled due to their policies around transgender athletes, with Pennsylvania eventually agreeing to limit transgender athletes in athletic programs.
