Kenyan court orders suspension of US Ebola quarantine facility

A court in Kenya on Friday blocked the government from permitting the U.S. to establish a quarantine facility for Americans exposed to Ebola virus, which is spreading in northeastern Congo.

The decision comes amid growing public backlash in the country to an announced U.S. plan, with critics accusing the Kenyan government of trading the country’s biosecurity for foreign aid from the Trump administration. 

A U.S. official told reporters Thursday that the Trump administration expected to open a 50-bed field hospital Friday at the Laikipia Air Base in Kenya to host Americans suspected of being infected with Ebola. 

But the ruling by the High Court in Nairobi put a stop to those plans until petitions against it are heard on June 2.

The petition was filed by the Katiba Institute, a civil society organization focused on defending the Kenyan Constitution. The institute said in a statement that the discussions over establishing the U.S. facility “raises grave constitutional concerns regarding the........
