Austria bans US military planes from its airspace
Austria is rejecting a request from the U.S. to use its airspace for military flights related to the war against Iran, with the Austrian government reaffirming its neutral stance and separating itself from President Trump’s war.
“We want nothing to do with Trump’s policy of chaos and his war, which will bring us the next energy crisis,” Austria’s Vice Chancellor Andi Babler wrote in a post on social platform X.
“Neutrality is a precious asset in our country. No to war.”
A spokesperson for Austria’s Defense Ministry told Reuters that Austria rejected several U.S. requests to allow military-related flyovers of its airspace.
All U.S. flyover requests of a military nature relating to the conflict in Iran had been rejected, the spokesperson told Reuters. Austria applies the same principle to other countries that are engaged in military conflict, the spokesperson added.
Austria is not a member of the NATO alliance and has a long-standing policy of neutrality.
Still, Austria’s rebuff of U.S. military assistance requests is notable coming as other European nations have rejected becoming a party to Trump’s war, which the U.S. launched jointly with Israel at the end of February.
Italy and Spain have also denied the U.S. access to its airspace related to the American military.
