Cornyn spars with conservatives online over SAVE America Act
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) took to the social platform X throughout Thursday night and Friday morning to vent some frustrations with conservatives, including a Senate colleague, about their push to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, a voter ID bill that doesn’t have the votes to pass in the upper chamber.
“Mike, I am a co-sponsor and have repeatedly voted for this but you don’t have the votes,” Cornyn wrote in response to a post from Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), one of that bill’s most fervent backers, that called out Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) for not “putting in the hard work” to pass the bill.
“@LeaderJohnThune can’t change that. It is math. Try focusing on Democrats instead of Republicans. Republican on Republican attacks are hurting our chances to win the majority in November,” Cornyn said.
