Democratic socialist holds wide lead in DC mayor race

City Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist, holds a sizable lead in the Washington, D.C., Democratic primary in the high-stakes mayoral race to replace retiring Mayor Muriel Bowser (D).

The latest results from Tuesday’s election show Lewis George with almost 53 percent of the vote, putting her 16.28 percentage points ahead of former City Council member-at-large Kenyan McDuffie in second place, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).

Lewis George, who has served on the city council for six years, entered the crowded primary with momentum after recent polling showed her holding a double-digit advantage over McDuffie. 

The closely watched race had no Republican candidates, so the winner of the Democratic primary will determine who succeeds Bowser, who opted not to run for reelection. Her term has been marked by public disputes with President........
