Congratulations to The Hill's 2026 Notable Staffer List Honorees!

Zach Barnes says that working with members of the House Freedom Caucus — the hard-line conservative group famous for confronting Republican leadership and instigating procedural and floor fights — makes him joke about how Congress must have operated a century ago.

“Members of Congress didn’t have 15 to 18 full-time staff in D.C., in their districts. They had maybe one administrative assistant,” Barnes said. “A lot of the Freedom Caucus members are sharp, know the procedure, spend a lot of time working on it. I think they’d be just as effective 100 years ago as they are now.”
