Democratic candidates to debate in New York House race to succeed Velázquez

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — A congressional seat that unifies Brooklyn and Queens is up for grabs.

State Assemblymember Claire Valdez, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and City Council Member Julie Won are among the top Democratic candidates competing for New York’s 7th District following the retirement of longtime Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D).

The winner will represent Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Maspeth, Long Island City, and part of Sunnyside. Some political experts have dubbed the area “Commie Corridor” for Democratic socialist and progressive-leaning voters.
