Giants’ Pride Night marred by player protests
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – The fallout from what was to be a celebration of LGBTQ Pride by the San Francisco Giants on Friday is continuing. Last Friday’s game against the Chicago Cubs was billed as “Pride Night” at Oracle Park.
The Giants gave players special Pride caps to wear.
While most players did so, pitcher Sam Hentges did not, and three other pitchers, including Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker, inscribed Bible verses on their Pride caps.
“Every time that Landen Roupp, or one of these players, gets up on the mound, they’re going to have to think, ‘should I be cheering for this person?’ because they won’t cheer for me, and that’s an experience that goes beyond the boycott, that goes, that’s an experience that’s like, ‘am I welcome here in this place?’” said Arne Johnson, a longtime Giants fan, the parent of two LGBTQ children.
