Club for Growth PAC backs Collins in competitive Georgia Senate GOP contest

The conservative Club for Growth PAC announced on Wednesday that it’s throwing its support behind Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) in the competitive Georgia Senate GOP primary to for Sen. Jon Ossoff’s (D-Ga.) seat.

“Since first being elected to Congress, Mike Collins has consistently championed legislation to cut wasteful spending, promote deregulatory efforts, and empower parents in their children’s education,” Club for Growth PAC President David McIntosh said in a statement.

“Collins is the conservative fighter Georgians deserve in the U.S. Senate. Club for Growth PAC is proud to endorse him in the race,” he added.

Collins is running against Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) and former University of Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley for the Republican nomination to challenge Ossoff in November.

Public polling shows Collins leading the pack in the May 19 primary, though Carter has been able to self-finance his campaign while Dooley enjoys Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp’s (R) endorsement. President Trump has notably not waded into the race.

Collins, whose work on the Laken Riley Act made him a national star among Republicans, enjoys the backing of some members of the Georgia congressional delegation, in addition to prominent Republicans like former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) and Trump advisor Bruce LeVell.

But the congressman and one of his top aides, Brandon Phillips, are also contending with a congressional probe into the hiring of a woman named Caroline Craze, whom the Office of Congressional Conduct said was in a personal relationship with Phillips, as an intern amid allegations that she did not do work for the office.

An attorney for the two men pressed the House Ethics Committee’s chief counsel to drop the probe, arguing the allegations came from former “disgruntled” staffers. They also defended Craze’s hiring, saying it was done properly.

“This bogus complaint is a sad attempt to derail one of Georgia’s most effective conservative legislators in Congress,” Collins’s office said in a statement in January, responding to the House Ethics Committee extending its review of the probe. “Rep. Collins looks forward to providing the House Ethics Committee all factual information and putting these meritless allegations to rest.”
