Schumer: House GOP plan to pass DHS stopgap is ‘dead’ in the Senate
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) on Friday said that a two-month Homeland Security funding stopgap being proposed by House Republicans would be “dead on arrival” in the Senate.
Schumer slammed the door on the idea of funding the entire Department of Homeland Security for 60 days to give White House and negotiators more time to negotiate full-year funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as well as reforms to immigration enforcement operations.
Schumer reached a deal with Senate Republicans early Friday morning to fund the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the Coast Guard through September. It passed the upper chamber unanimously.
But the deal does not include any funding for ICE or Border Patrol, leaving House conservatives caught off guard and fuming. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) rejected the Senate-passed bill, saying, “We’re not doing that.”
“We’ve been clear from day one: Democrats will fund critical Homeland Security functions—but we will not give a blank check to Trump’s lawless and deadly immigration militia without reforms,” Schumer said Fridy afternoon.
“A 60-day CR that locks in the status quo is dead on arrival in the Senate, and Republicans know it,” he warned.
The Senate has adjourned for a two-week Easter recess and will not reconvene in regular session until Monday, April 13.
The House Freedom Caucus on Friday slammed the Senate Homeland Security funding deal as “bad for America.”
“We can’t believe that the Senate abdicated its responsibility this morning of not funding the child sex trafficking division of ICE, that they don’t didn’t fund the Border Patrol. I guess the Democrats want a wide open border,” Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris (R-Md.) said.
“The only thing we’re going to support is adding that funding into the bill, adding voter ID, sending it back to the Senate, make them come back in and do their work. The bottom line is, this deal is bad for America,” he said.
