From formula to birds, here are the foodborne outbreaks the CDC is investigating
(NEXSTAR) – While authorities are working to determine what is behind the spread of a parasite capable of causing “explosive” diarrhea, there are already nearly two dozen ongoing foodborne outbreak investigations in the U.S., impacting nearly every state.
It’s not uncommon for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be investigating multistate outbreaks spurred by germs. The agency said that, each week, it usually coordinates between 17 and 36 investigations.
As of early July, there are 22 active investigations impacting multiple states. In some cases, the CDC issues outbreak notices.
Here’s a look at many of the active outbreaks the CDC has warned about.
Salmonella illnesses linked to supplements, backyard birds
More than half of the current investigations, unsurprisingly, are connected to salmonella.
The bacteria are believed to cause roughly 1.35 million infections annually in the U.S. Salmonella is the nation’s (and the world’s) leading cause of foodborne-related sickness, hospitalization and death.
There are 13 open investigations linked to salmonella, according to the CDC. The agency has issued notices for three: two linked to moringa leaf and one for backyard poultry.
