Cases of drug-resistant salmonella, several among kids, linked to outbreak; CDC issues warning

(NEXSTAR) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning of more than two dozen cases of possibly drug-resistant salmonella cases across 13 states.

In an update last week, the CDC said all 34 people — several of whom are children— have the same strain of salmonella, which has been linked to backyard poultry.

To make matters more difficult, the CDC says an analysis of all 34 patients showed the strain may be resistant to the antibiotic fosfomycin. Samples from eight of those patients showed there could be resistance to other antibiotics commonly used in salmonella infections.

Where have the drug-resistant cases of salmonella been found?

So far, cases have primarily been found in the Midwest. As of Tuesday, the CDC shows Michigan has reported the most confirmed cases at six, followed by Ohio and Wisconsin, which each have had five cases.

Indiana, Kentucky, and Maine have each had three confirmed cases, while Maryland and West Virginia have recorded two each.

Florida, Illinois, Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Tennessee have each confirmed a single case.

What do we know about the patients?
