When President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated in Butler, Pennsylvania in July of 2024, the moment was assumed (perhaps naively) by some on the right to be a watershed moment. The egregious display of political violence that was the culmination of a years-long assassination prep campaign against the president and more broadly, Republicans, was certainly the last, so many thought.
A little more than a year later, Charlie Kirk was murdered on a Utah college campus for speaking to students. And it’s more clear now than ever that even Kirk’s murder won’t be the watershed moment the country needs, as evidence by the recent viral mocking of Kirk.
Islamic Marxist Hasan Piker mocked Kirk during a live tour performance, singing the “We Are Charlie Kirk” song as his podcast co-hosts and audience laughed.
The sick mocking was just another act of assassination prep. When political opponents are dehumanized, their suffering is a “joke” and audiences and the public are gradually conditioned to treat their murders as funny, justified and even deserved. This creates a culture in which political violence becomes normalized and accepted.
