The deaths of a woman and her 10-month-old daughter, who fell into an open sewer near Bhatti Gate, are a tragic reminder that the curse of open manholes is a nationwide problem. Though Lahore can take some solace in the fact that the problem is not apparently as widespread as in Karachi, nor the government as apathetic, even one such avoidable death is too many.
