Northern Tasmanians I speak with are on a unity ticket with concerns about the James Boag's site in Launceston. People believe the iconic site will be shut down, leave a massive hole in the city, and become yet another piece of decaying infrastructure.

Those aren't overly cynical gripes; they are evidence that our region has reached a critical crossroads. The question I get asked in concert with these concerns is: Are decision-makers listening?

Lately, our political leaders have been very eager to tell us how well they can listen. At a recent Northern Economic Leaders Forum, the Labor shadow cabinet, including Janie Finlay and Jess Greene, and led by Josh Willie, sat down to hear from the community. To their credit, they walked away with the right message: Northern Tasmania doesn't need more hollow announcements or prolonged parliamentary inquiries. It needs coordination, accountability, and actual delivery. Labor proved it was listening when it correctly killed off the idea of another time-wasting inquiry.
