Texas Lawmaker Who Struggled With Dyslexia Wants to Take His Fight to Congress

Republican Texas congressional candidate Steve Toth has struggled with dyslexia his entire life. If elected to Congress, he wants to make sure kids with dyslexia do not face the same challenges he did growing up.

Toth, a current Texas state representative who defeated Republican incumbent Dan Crenshaw in the Republican primary election for Texas’ 2nd Congressional District, revealed his plans to improve literacy rates and education for dyslexic children to the Daily Signal.

“I want a separate category for dyslexic students in special education, and I want to make sure that those kids have the opportunity to get services in the event they’re identified,” Toth said. “And I’m going to make it mandatory. I would love to try to make it mandatory for parents that their child has a reading problem to be tested for dyslexia.”

Toth said the federal government needs to make it mandatory for states to help identify dyslexia in children, stop stigmatizing the learning disability and instead view it as a strength.

Toth believes that many dyslexic children have a “superpower”: They can see things most others can’t.

“A lot of engineers have dyslexia,” he said. “Some of the greatest inventors that have ever lived are dyslexic. They may have a reading problem of decoding these P’s and Q’s, but what they do have is the ability in their brain to see things in three dimensions, which makes them incredibly powerful when it comes to engineering.”
