Eileen Gu, 22, is a champion skier and an undeniable traitor.
Gu was born to an American father and a Chinese mother. Raised in San Francisco’s affluent Sea Cliff neighborhood, Gu would attend the city’s top private schools, before earning early admittance to Stanford University. With an impressive athletic record under her belt and an SAT score of 1580, she was practically a shoo-in.
Gu would probably be held up as a model of American excellence, were it not for the fact that she doesn’t care to be American. Gu announced in 2019 that she would represent China in the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and represented China at this year’s Olympic Winter Games.
Gu’s enduring loyalty to the highest paycheck is insulting enough; Gu reportedly rakes in $23 million a year, thanks to a slew of brand endorsements. Companies are likely enticed by Gu’s social media presence: She has more than 7 million followers on Chinese social media platform Weibo and more than 2 million followers on Instagram. Gu has chosen to rub salt in the wound by commenting on U.S. politics, but remaining totally mum on Chinese politics.
