Pop star Meghan Trainor announced Tuesday that her family welcomed a baby girl into their ranks via surrogacy. The news arrived with several pictures of Trainor and other family members holding the baby girl, but when you look at them, something just doesn’t sit right.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE magazine, Trainor claimed that using a surrogate was the safest option to grow their family, but she never goes into what made it unsafe for her to carry her own child.

“It wasn’t our first choice, but we had endless conversations with our doctors on this journey, and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family,” Trainor said, adding, “I want people to know that surrogacy is just another beautiful way to build a family.
