Our media class has trained the public not to trust them. Decades of choosing winners, whether political or cultural, have left Americans wary of anything the media produces. That is why Ross Douthat’s “60 Minutes” interview with Patrick Clancy felt like a correction.

One of the most frustrating aspects of modern media is the constant need for journalists to become the story. But Douthat changed the routine. Instead, he did the simplest and rarest thing in modern television: he let the surviving father talk about his three children who were killed at the hands of his estranged wife, Lindsay Clancy.

Cora was 5. Dawson was 3. Callan was 8 months old. Lindsay has admitted, through her lawyers, that she strangled them in the basement of the family’s Duxbury home in January 2023. One of the more heart-wrenching moments of the interview came when Patrick spoke about the moment first responders found Callan still alive. He said he raced to Boston Children’s Hospital, praying for another chance with him.
