MARTEL MAXWELL: My padel debut brought back Broughty Ferry childhood tennis memories
Dave Gordon would have been proud.
That’s what I thought as I played my first game of padel at Forthill Sports Club in Broughty Ferry.
For those of you who were not part of the Forthill Massive in the 80s and 90s, Dave was our tennis coach and a one-off.
While others opted for an Adidas shellsuit, Dave was resplendent in a satin-esque navy Dunlop two-piece in a blue sporty number – think high end Ford Capri.
Can anyone remember what it was?
While I’d love to reminisce about Dave, I’ve already done that here before – once before he passed away and I was delighted to learn he’d read every word; and once after he died in 2021 aged 81.
‘Forthill was place to be’
His obituary is worthy of a read – highlights including getting to know Prince Rainer of Monaco and his wife Grace Kelly while coaching Prince Albert who sent Dave a handwritten letter wishing him well when he fell ill.
He also played tennis and squash for Scotland and was responsible for bringing hundreds of kids up to a level where they could play competitively.
