Why Are Solar Panels Always Tilted? The Simple Science Behind the Angle
This story is part of “How Does This Work?” — The Better India’s series that takes the everyday things you see, use and rely on, and uncovers the clever technology, design and sustainable thinking that makes them work better. From the objects in your home to the systems around you, we break down the ideas behind them in simple, easy-to-understand language. Because innovation isn’t always about futuristic machines or complicated technology. Sometimes, it’s hiding in the things we use every day.
The next time you pass a rooftop covered with solar panels, take a closer look. You’ll notice that they don’t simply lie flat against the roof. Most are propped up at an angle, quietly facing the sky.
It’s easy to dismiss that slope as just a part of the mounting structure. But that small tilt is actually helping the panels do their most important job, catching more of the Sun’s energy.
After all, sunlight falls on rooftops every day. But how much of that sunlight a solar panel can turn into electricity depends not just on having a panel, but on how you position it.
And as solar power becomes increasingly common, India had 164.59 GW of installed solar capacity as of July 2026, getting that positioning right can make a meaningful difference to how much electricity a system produces.
So, why exactly are solar panels tilted?
It all comes down to how sunlight hits the panel
A solar panel works through photovoltaic (PV) cells. When sunlight falls on these semiconductor cells, the energy from photons helps generate an electric current.
But not all sunlight hits a panel........
