Vale, Dennis, the fans will never forget your Cometti-isms

Ah, sing it Roy and HG Nelson: “Too much sport is never enough!”

And how funny they should say that. For following the overwhelming reaction to my Thursday piece on the late, great AFL commentator Dennis Cometti, so many readers have come back with their own favourite pearls from the great man, that I am going to return to the same well, and list a few more.

And, yes, as I wrote in the foreword to Dennis’ 2007 book, That’s Ambitious, which chronicled some of his best, a true Cometti-ism isn’t merely a prefabricated wry comment or clever remark dropped idly into the commentary at some point.

A true Cometti-ism has to live off the land, survey the scene and strike ... in such a fashion that it near takes your breath away with the cleverness of it all.

“Yes, yes, yes,” I wrote, “I know that Dennis must sometimes sharpen his spears before heading out onto the field of battle, and that he must even occasionally arrange those spears in some order, but even when he does so, neither the audience nor his co-commentators ever see it coming – and the results are always devastating.”

For the record, Cometti never denied having quotes in his quiver, ready to go.

A case in point was when Melbourne’s Colin Sylvia stopped an opponent’s kick and Dennis dead-panned, “Sylvia’s smother”, in tribute to a Dr Hook hit from the 1970s, before adding, “I have been waiting to do that for some time”.

Anyhoo, as contributed by readers, here are a few more of Dennis’ finest.
