The only blemish on this otherwise perfect overlook of the San Francisco Bay is the hum from Highway 101 near the Golden Gate Bridge, but the murmur of rubber is quickly eclipsed. The hill is not the tallest in the Marin Headlands, yet the vantage offers what is likely the most breathtaking — and freely available — panorama of the Bay Area.

Perched above two tunnels, the so-called Engagement Hill, a name designated on Google Maps, is just over a mile from a commuter parking lot off the highway in Sausalito. The hilltop still manages to hide in plain sight. It’s located almost directly above the Robin Williams Tunnel and not far from the Baker-Barry Tunnel, where the rolling hills in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area tend to conceal the bald peak.

The trek is not among AllTrails’ top 10 hikes in the headlands, and even though I grew up nearby, I hadn’t found time to summit the hill until the holidays. The winter season proved beneficial on my two summits: Rainfall rinsed the region of smog to add even more clarity to the vast, sweeping pageantry of natural and metropolitan splendor. The avenues in the Sunset and Richmond neighborhoods were aligned in perfect rows as they seemed to cascade toward the Pacific Ocean. Afternoon light froze San Francisco in a state of regal composure. Tidal patterns carved amorphous shapes into the bay’s glossy surface. From up above, the magnificent motion of the region appeared poised in a lasting stillness.

A home along Wolfback Ridge in Marin County, Calif., overlooks San Francisco Bay. 

The expression “a million-dollar view” shortchanges the experience, since a nearby home in the coveted Wolfback Ridge neighborhood recently sold for over $7 million. There are a couple of dozen homes in the neighborhood, and southbound drivers on Highway 101 can spot a few clinging to the hillside when approaching the tunnel. These houses are a fraction of what could have been if developers had gotten their way in the 1960s. A proposed city called Marincello attempted to replace the headlands with high-rises........
