A decade or two ago, I would have said the busiest day for buying fresh-cut Christmas trees was the Saturday nearest Dec. 10.

Sure, some folks would shop early for best selection, and others would wait until a few days before Christmas, but most would buy their tree about 14 days before the big day.

These days, folks are jumping the gun.

Threats of tree shortages are prompting folks to buy trees early to avoid disappointment. And long-lasting balsam trees have taken over as the fresh-cut tree of choice, letting folks bring their tree indoors a week or two earlier.

Those buying Christmas trees early should leave them outdoors until it’s time to decorate. Leave the tree........
