Gilberts: Some old rules for teachers and students still relevant

This week, just in time for another school year to begin, I am once again dipping into The Rural Schools of Tilbury East Township.

Just in time for another school year to begin, we are dipping into The Rural Schools of Tilbury East Township, researched and written by Marianne Lucio and Julie Magerka. We highly recommend this book.

There are two inserts in the book. The first, 1915 – Rules for Teachers, is the kind of thing you may have seen before. We used to have one of these, in plaque form, on our wall at home. It comes from the Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum, and it includes such things as “You will not marry during the term of your contract.” That was common in those days; women schoolteachers had to quit teaching as soon as they got married. We knew at least one woman who had to do that.

This set of rules also includes: “You may not smoke cigarettes; “You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have the permission of the chairman of the board” and “You must wear at least two petticoats.”
