As usual, I ran out of room. So this week, a few more disaster stories whose sites you could visit without breaking the bank.

Let’s start with one of the better known Southwestern Ontario’s disaster stories: the Victoria disaster.

Many think that means it happened on Victoria Day, and they’re not wrong, but it’s called that because the steamboat that sank in less than a metre of water between downtown London and Springbank Park on May 24, 1881, was called the Victoria.

At that time, the Victoria Day holiday was much anticipated. It was just one day and there wouldn’t be another holiday until Dominion Day.

May 24, 1881, dawned clear and warm, so Londoners in their thousands sailed from the Dundas Street docks out........
