Reflections: The Listowel Brass Band hit a high note at the 1926 CNE

Community support and years of determination helped the band earn third place in a closely contested provincial competition

Many communities across Perth County have been home to talented bands that routinely performed at local fairs, parades and other community events. Listowel, Stratford, Mitchell, Sebringville and Brodhagen are just a few of the towns and cities that have had their own community bands over the years – some of which remain active today.

In 1926, the Listowel Brass Band won third place in the Band Tournament at the Canadian National Exhibition. Upon their return, an article in the Listowel Banner praised the band’s success stating, “The old maxim, ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again’ has once again been proved a wise one. For the past few years the Listowel Band has been going to Toronto and taking part in competitions at the exhibition, but has been unable to win a place. This year, however, they were more successful and were able to secure third place in competition with 13 other bands from all parts of Ontario.”
