Reflections: May Day celebrations at the Stratford Normal School

The crowning of the May Queen was among the highlights of the annual celebration

The Stratford Normal School was a staple in Perth County’s educational landscape from the time it opened in 1908. Students from across Southwestern Ontario attended the school to pursue their teacher training and begin careers in education.

Though the school closed in 1973, it left a lasting impact on the area and created indelible memories for the many students who passed through its halls. One of the most cherished traditions was the annual May Day celebration.

May Day, which began in the school’s early years, celebrated spring, school spirit and student life. The event featured music, pageantry and the crowning of the May Queen. To be chosen as queen was considered one of the highest honours at the school, as the position was awarded to the student elected most popular by her peers.
