Trump Promised To End Foreign Aid. Now He's Giving Christian Groups Nearly $2 Billion.

The administration says faith-based organizations deliver aid more efficiently, but offers no data to support that claim—and its preference for religious providers raises constitutional questions.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) may be dismantled, but billions of taxpayer dollars are still flowing overseas.

Last week, the Trump administration announced that it will direct nearly $2 billion in humanitarian funding toward faith-based organizations, including $1.4 billion through its America First Global Health Strategy. Three Christian organizations—World Vision, Compassion International, and Samaritan's Purse—are among the largest recipients, with the State Department calling it "the largest allocation of global health foreign assistance to faith-based organizations in over 20 years."

Of the nearly $2 billion, $850 million will go to a World Vision-led global consortium, $570 million to faith and community-based health facilities through foreign governments, $300 million to Samaritan's Purse, and $238 million to a World Vision and Compassion International humanitarian consortium.

Samaritan's Purse, which will receive the funding over two years, explicitly describes itself as an "evangelical Christian organization" that provides "spiritual and physical aid." Its mission statement says it helps "meet the needs of people…with the purpose of sharing God's love through........
