A plug-in hybrid with a weak electric-only range erases much of the fuel savings the technology promises in the first place, leaving a shopper paying gas-engine prices for a hybrid premium. Reliability, owner satisfaction and road test scores also vary considerably across model generations, even within the same badge.

Consumer Reports identified used plug-in hybrids with an EPA-estimated electric-only range greater than 25 miles and gas-only fuel economy above 30 mpg.
