Picking a crib is one of the first major decisions parents face before bringing a baby home. A poorly built one can compromise safety or fall apart well before a toddler outgrows it.

Consumer Reports tested 40 cribs for safety, ease of assembly and construction. Here are its nine top picks.

Emerson Convertible Crib

Solid pine construction and a metal mattress support helped this $600 crib earn the top score in Consumer Reports' 2026 testing. The crib converts into a toddler bed, though buyers need to purchase the conversion kit separately. CR testers found changing the mattress support height frustrating, since the task requires partially disassembling the frame. CR also noted that the crib's 39-inch rail height can make it hard for shorter caregivers to lift a baby in or out.

The Newport Crib ties the Emerson for the top score in Consumer Reports' 2026 testing. Made of poplar wood with an oak veneer, the $650 crib meets standards such as Prop 65 and TSCA for low chemical emissions. CR testers found it very easy to assemble and praised its three adjustable........
