For years, conversations about youth mental health have focused on therapy, medication, screen time, and social media. Yet one of the most accessible interventions may be hiding in plain sight: exercise.
A major 2026 umbrella review published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry analyzed the findings of 21 systematic reviews, incorporating 375 randomized controlled trials and more than 38,000 children and adolescents. The question was simple: Can exercise meaningfully improve symptoms of depression and anxiety in young people? The answer was a resounding yes.
Mental health challenges are rising
Depression and anxiety have become some of the most common health concerns facing young people. The authors note that approximately one in four children and adolescents experience elevated symptoms of depression, while about one in five experience elevated anxiety symptoms. These challenges can affect academic performance, relationships, self-esteem, and long-term well-being, often persisting into adulthood if left untreated.
