The Barriers to Setting Boundaries

Despite being fairly straightforward, setting boundaries is difficult in practice due to emotional forces.

Setting boundaries is a sign of courage, self-awareness, and self-compassion.

How someone responds to your boundaries tells you a lot about the nature of the relationship.

Setting boundaries is a fairly straightforward process. Saying "no" to requests that are not aligned with your values allows you to preserve your limited time, energy, and focus for tasks that matter most to you.

Despite sounding simple in theory, setting boundaries is difficult in practice. This is because of underlying emotional forces that turn your "no" into a "yes." When approached with an unwanted request, you reluctantly acquiesce to avoid the emotional discomfort that would stem from saying "no."

Of course, not setting boundaries comes at a great cost. It feels overwhelming trying to keep up with competing work, family, and social responsibilities that pull you in different directions. You may also harbor feelings of frustration and resentment because of being inundated with endless tasks that prevent you from living an authentic life that is consistent with your values. Finally, you feel exhausted and burned out due to having no leisure time to recharge your batteries.

And yet, despite the great cost of not setting boundaries, you continue to say "yes" to unwanted requests. This shows the magnitude of the underlying emotional forces that prevent you from setting healthy boundaries in your life.

Let’s explore these underlying forces and how to overcome them.
