AI-tiquette: When Did That Become Okay?
Concealing AI assistance can feel deceptive; revealing it can diminish the message.
The signal of care can increasingly be produced independently of the experience and expenditure of care.
If everyone can generate elaborate outputs on demand, abundance may gradually drain them of value.
There was a time, not long ago, when asking a machine to write a birthday message would have seemed absurd. Having it compose a condolence note might have felt callous. Sending an artificial intelligence (AI)-written love letter? Surely that crossed a line. Using it to answer a colleague’s thoughtful email bordered on insulting. Now consider the same acts in 2026. From love life via friends to work, generative AI outputs have become all-pervasive. We may still hesitate, yet ever less. Behaviors that once provoked outrage are evolving through a familiar cycle: questionable becomes tolerated; tolerated becomes normal; and gradually normal becomes invisible.
Welcome to AI-tiquette: the rapidly evolving, largely unwritten etiquette governing what we delegate to AI, what we still believe deserves human effort, and how we judge one another as that boundary shifts.
From outrageous to ordinary
Social norms arise without trumpets. They morph and migrate as behaviors evolve, and contribute to that evolution. Answering a phone at the dinner table once signaled importance; eventually it was regarded as plain discourtesy. Texting instead of calling initially seemed impersonal; today, an unexpected phone call feels intrusive for many. AI accelerates the technological integration process—but it changes something more fundamental than the style in which we communicate. It moderates the amount of human effort behind the communication itself. That process is........
