The King gave a superbly crafted speech to a joint session of Congress that had all members, Republicans and Democrats, on their feet, applauding, many times over. Later that evening, at the state banquet in the White House, hosted by President Trump, the King gave a more informal address that was at times witty, comical, endearing and elegant, yet also historically pointed.
In these speeches, the King demonstrated that he is a superb diplomat with the ability to convey important messages to Americans from common citizens to members of Congress, to the president himself, if he was listening. These messages dealt with the historic relationship between the United States and Britain, and the shared political, economic, and social values that both countries hold dear. They also dealt with the fact that America, Britain, and Canada are distinct, sovereign........
