CHEERS AND JEERS: Jeers to the P.E.I. government for selling wetland

Jeers to the P.E.I. government’s back-door process for developers that has been part of the controversy surrounding ousted cabinet minister Gilles Arsenault. In this case, the owner of Ocean View Resort in Summerside planned to develop parts of the former Summerside golf course, which included parcels of wetland. The transaction included a donation to help offset the environmental impact. We can imagine there are many times when this makes some measure of sense when a small swampy square couple of meters shouldn’t hold up a housing project. But it does beg the questions: just how often is this seemingly common practice happening, how many acres of wetlands have been drained over the years, is anyone tracking it, and is it in a publicly searchable database? After all, when the developer wanted to make changes in Summerside, Arsenault described it as “tweaks” and “no big deal.”
