CHEERS AND JEERS: Cheers and jeers to public engagement and vitriol over AI data centres

Cheers and jeers to people following the news out of a recent Charlottetown city council meetings where an issue was raised concerning the city’s capacity for housing an AI data centre. The Guardian recently covered a meeting where Mayor Philip Brown asked questions about the technology and water usage involved if such a project were ever hypothetically brought before the city. Online reaction was swift and angry, with the context of The Guardian’s coverage being lost in the firestorm. The mayor said he received calls at home and saw some concerning vitriol on the topic. Jeers to those who failed to look for credible sources before leaping to conclusions and fanning the flames of outrage. But cheers to those who have become more civic-minded and engaged with city decisions as a result of this controversy. The Guardian will continue to follow the story.
