Fanny Brice, Lovesick Lake, and Pete McGillen

Back in the 1920s and 30s, Fanny Brice was considered one of the greatest names in vaudeville. She was a comedienne, singer, and the biggest star of the Ziegfeld Follies.

Those of us who were children in the 1940s remember her as “Baby Snooks,” that precocious, bratty kid who entertained us every Sunday night on radio. I loved Baby Snooks. So did millions of all ages.

Others caught up with Brice in 1968, when Barbra Streisand portrayed her in the movie “Funny Girl.”

And then there were the songs she made famous, including “My Man” and “Second Hand Rose.”

Brice was the daughter of Jewish immigrants. She grew up in New York City, dropped out of school after Grade 8 to join a burlesque show, and went on to become the only female comedienne ever to appear on a U.S. postage stamp.
