The Stratton Cup: Peterborough’s oldest golf trophy

Choose the adjective and it applies to any of the trophies and cups that are the symbols of the Peterborough Golf and Country Club’s 125-plus years of golf competitions.

Fancy. Beautiful. Original. Classic.

There’s the Westclox Trophy. The Rose Bowl. The Stratton Cup. Reminders of an era when trophies of all shapes and sizes held Stanley Cup and Claret Jug-type appeal. When the name of the cup was synonymous with the competitive event itself.

At a recent reception at our club, we displayed a collection of our oldest and grandest trophies. The history behind these sterling silver cups, engraved beer steins and fancy plaques echoes the history of golf in this region.

Their very existence, and the people and competitions that they document, are the best proof we have that golf competitions here in Peterborough date back to the late 1800s. It is surely a source of pride among our members that the club’s course(s) located on Auburn Hill can lay claim to being the home of golf in........
