In the 2022 municipal election, only 10 per cent of voters cast ballots in the township where I live. Why such a dismal turnout?

They literally had no one to vote for. With four out of five councillors acclaimed, most of us had to accept those who had signed up. Several other townships had one or two people vying for the same council seats.

Boy, have the tides turned this time around!

Scanning the candidate lists for all eight townships in Peterborough County, my spirits are buoyed to see so many people interested in serving.

Out of all the mayors, only three have been acclaimed: Trent Lakes, Selwyn and North Kawartha. Five people want the mayor’s job in Norwood, four in Cavan Monaghan, three in Douro-Dummer and two each in Havelock and Otonabee—South Monaghan.

In each case, an incumbent council member is facing new challengers.
