Indigenous-themed books ahead of National Indigenous Peoples Day

With National Indigenous Peoples Day coming up on June 21, here are some books to read from a First Nations’ perspective, available at Take Cover Books, Chapters and the Peterborough Public Library.

‘Wild People Quiet’ by Tara Gereaux

In “Wild People Quiet,” the main character Florence tries to leave behind the hardships of her early life growing up in a poor Métis family. She reinvents herself to pass as a white person, which works for a while, but when her younger brother comes back into her life, things start to unravel and she is forced to confront issues she’s been trying to forget.

It’s only when she starts beading again, a skill which her Aunt Lillian taught her as a child, that she becomes grounded.

Told in two timelines, an earlier one around 1910, and a later one, after the war, the story tells the brutal tale of the harm done to Métis people, being forced off their land, denied an education, employment and basic services such........
