Every year as summer begins to set in I feel a tugging sensation calling me to get the boat ready so that we can go out to get some photos of the loons with their young ones.

The last couple of years have been difficult ones for one of our local loon pairs. Either their eggs have not hatched successfully or they lost their young very early to predators, so this year when we got out in early June to photograph them, it was with a great deal of nervous apprehension.

As we spotted them on the water we were very relieved to see that they did have a young loon chick with them. They just had the one chick this year but it seemed to be doing quite well.

Young loons can swim from the moment they hatch and very shortly after hatching they leave the nest.........
